For more than 60 years Buford was the largest city in Gwinnett County. Buford had the first bank in the county, and had two flourishing banks before any other permanent banking facilities were established in the county.

Buford has been named nationally and internationally as “The Leather City” because it was known as a historic tannery town. Bona Allen, Inc. sprang up in Buford in the 1920’s and produced nationally known shoes, saddles of national and Hollywood reputation, harness, horse collars, and other leather products.

Buford is home to the Bona Allen Mansion, which was built during 1912 and 1913 by Bona Allen. It is on the National Register for Historic Places. This property now operates as an event facility for weddings, parties and socials. The Bona Allen Mansion is located on Main Street in downtown Buford.

Downtown Buford offers lots of unique shopping. Nostalgia fills the streets as Artists open their shops to show their talents. There are also wonderful restaurants that offer an amazing dining experience. Concerts and Festivals are often held in downtown Buford.

After World War II, the construction of the Buford Dam was the next big project coming to Buford. Construction began in March 1950 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. By 1956 the Chattahoochee River began to fill the lake. And in 1958, the Army Corps opened Lake Lanier for public recreation. Today Lake Lanier is popular for its great parks for hiking, fishing, boating, swimming, camping, beach & Water Park and golf at Lake Lanier Islands.

Buford has many things to offer its residents including great retail shopping and restaurants. The Mall of Georgia facilitates over 200 stores, including JC Penny’s, Belk’s, & Macy’s. Most any type of restaurant in which you choose is within 2 miles of the City of Buford. Many major chain restaurants have chosen to locate to Buford, as well as many unique and locally owned restaurants.

Buford is conveniently located to Interstates I-85 and I-985, Buford Highway and Peachtree Industrial Boulevard. Local Bus and Marta Station provide easy access to Atlanta. Hartsfield International, Peachtree Dekalb, North Fulton and Gwinnett Airports are all convenient.

Gwinnett Medical Center, Joan Glancy Hospital, and Northeast Georgia Medical Center are all easily accessible from the City of Buford.

The Buford City School System is an independent city system that serves approximately 2,700 students in four schools: Buford Elementary School (K-2), Buford Academy (3-5), Buford Middle School (6-8), and Buford High School (9-12). The schools provide a quality education for the students who live within the city limits of Buford. All Buford students are educated in state-of-the-art facilities that were funded and will continue to be enhanced through SPLOST and through the generous support of the Buford city government. The schools are a high community priority, as evidenced by the close and extraordinarily supportive relationship the city government maintains with the school system.
